EastSide Charter School, Family Foundations Academy Announce Leadership Changes
Lamont Browne Accepts New Position in Colorado; Aaron Bass Hired to Succeed Browne as Executive Director
Wilmington, Del., May 12, 2016 – The Board of Directors of EastSide Charter School announced today the resignation of Dr. Lamont Browne, Executive Director effective July 1st. Dr. Browne and his family will be moving to Denver, Colorado, where he will work in an executive leadership role in a public school district in the Denver area. Browne remarked, “There are many high need kids all over our country, and I am excited to build upon all that I’ve learned here to have a positive impact on teachers and leaders in Denver. I couldn’t be more humbled by the opportunity I’ve had in Delaware, and the support and success of every member of my team over the last 5 years.”
EastSide also has the responsibility for managing Family Foundations Academy (FFA) and effective July 1st Aaron Bass will replace Browne as Executive Director of both schools. Bass brings extensive educational leadership experience, most recently as the founder and principal of KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy in Philadelphia, PA. Bass successfully established and built Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale in 2004, which is part of a national organization that prepares middle school students for college by providing high school and college student experiences in the teaching profession. In 2007, Bass joined KIPP Philadelphia Charter School as the upper school dean and later founded and led the first KIPP high school in Philadelphia in 2010. KIPP is among the most respected and nationally recognized organizations of charter schools in America.
“The opportunity Lamont has in Colorado is an outstanding recognition of the work he has done building and growing the EastSide and Family Foundations Academy charter schools,” said Charles McDowell, chair of both boards of directors. “Lamont is going on to lead school district principals and leaders doing what he does best – evaluate and improve the impact of instruction and leadership to improve outcomes for children most in need. We are sorry to lose him from Delaware, at least for now, but we are proud of the opportunity he has before him.”
“Our schools have long looked to KIPP as a model for charter school excellence, and we are excited that Aaron has agreed to join our schools. His leadership and track record for excellence is known throughout the national charter network. He is a fantastic fit for where we are going with these two schools,” McDowell said.
EastSide Charter School (Pre-K – 8, founded in 1997) and Family Foundations Academy (K-8, founded in 2006) are free, public schools that collectively educate more than 1,300 students across three campuses in Wilmington and New Castle, Del. In January 2015, the schools formed a partnership to be overseen and supported by a Central Office. Both schools pride themselves on being community-based schools, valuing community partnerships, strong relationships with families, and a dedicated and hard-working staff to ensure academic success for all students.

Dear EastSide Families,
It is with great humility that I announce today that I will be leaving my EastSide home that I have cherished and absolutely loved for the last 5 years. My wife and I made the difficult decision to move our family across the country to Denver, Colorado this summer. I will be working as a district administrator in one of the largest school districts in Colorado. As someone who has spent his entire life living in Wilmington, Newark, and Philadelphia, I am both excited for this move and scared out of my mind. But I truly believe that one grows most when pushing themselves out of their comfort zone to accept a new challenge and I believe that this one is best for my family.
I started working at EastSide in March 2011 and worked diligently every day to make a positive difference in the lives of our kids and our teachers. Some of those teachers are now principals, others are still at EastSide having a great impact. While some of those students are now excelling in high school; many others are still at EastSide, getting pushed every day to learn, grow, and be the best version of themselves. We have grown from 390 students to more than 500. We have a 5 Star Pre-K program. And we’ve been recognized state-wide and nationally for our success and achievement. This was a total team effort – it was the passion and excellence of our teachers and leaders, the commitment of our parents, and the energy of our students that provided the conditions for us all to be successful. I am so excited for that to not just continue, but to grow even stronger.
The Board of Directors has hired Aaron Bass to take my position as the new Executive Director, effective July 1. I made the strong recommendation of Mr. Bass because of his skillset and commitment to urban education and his successful experience founding and leading a high performing charter school in Philadelphia. Mr. Bass will spend about 12 days with me and our team over the next two months, learning our best practices while designing the changes necessary to make EastSide and Family Foundations the best network of schools in Delaware. You are invited to come to EastSide to meet him on Wednesday, May 25 at 6:00pm in our cafeteria.
Another important change is at the school leadership level. Ms. Taryn Fletcher has agreed to support this transition by moving to the Central Office effective immediately. Ms. Rachael Staab, currently the Assistant Principal has agreed to be the Acting Principal for the remainder of the school year effective immediately. Her sole job is to work with our parents, staff, and students, and do whatever it takes to ensure that EastSide has a great May and June and is set up for success for next school year.
On behalf of my wife and daughter, Melissa and Sydney, thank you for welcoming us into your homes and community. Thank you for your belief in me and my team and support of all that we’ve tried to accomplish. The work is not finished. I will be here through the month of June providing support throughout this transition – specifically making sure EastSide is at its best. I will always love my Soaring Eagles.
Dr. Lamont W. Browne
